Geocache Description:

Dr. arch.

[EN] Looking for information about this building online, it is not possible to find much, mainly the same few sentences copied from questionable sources, and this information is supplemented by dubious comments. However, some information has been obtained from geocachers.

In Allažmuiža, near the Ezerkalni houses, there are ruins of a Swedish church built in the 17th century. The church was built in the early 17th century. The building, made of fieldstones, shows window frames and corner intersections, as well as a cross made of Allaži sandstone. There was a medieval cemetery around the church. The ruins of the church are a local architectural monument.

SUPPLEMENT: It has been reported in both official and unofficial sources that it is a church, without verifying what historians and architects say about it. Dr. arch. Ilmārs Dirveiks has researched this building and believes that it has nothing to do with the 'Swedish church'. A wooden church from the Swedish period has been preserved in drawings, but later a warehouse was built in this place. Crosses as a protective symbol on facades are found on Riga's spīķeri and many rural barns. However, when entering the ruins of the building, a specialist can see that it is not a church. The building, made of fieldstones, shows window frames and corners, as well as a cross made of Allaži sandstone. A wooden church was already located here in medieval times. The locals know the story that the baroness could not stand the noise raised by the churchgoers, so she had the church moved to Stīveri. Before World War I, the building was used as a manor shop, and later as a warehouse. During the collective farm years, horses were kept here.

Allažmuiža (formerly also known as Ausmas, Ezerkalns) is a village in the Allaži parish of the Sigulda municipality. It is located on the banks of the Tumšupe River, 4.5 km from the center of the Allaži parish, 16 km from the center of the Sigulda municipality, and 49 km from Riga. The settlement was formed near the former center of the Allaži manor. It grew into a "Ausma" collective farm village after the war. Only the mill building (1801), the mill pond, and the manor park have survived from the former Allažmuiža. The manor house was burned down in 1905, and the rest were destroyed during World War I, when the front line passed through the area. The park has a free layout with decorative groups and scenic perspectives.

The cache is a PET with a logbook and pen. Respect the private property where the ruins are located and the posted signs, and also follow traffic rules and safety guidelines by parking in the appropriate location. Happy caching!
