The biggest crane in the World is currently in Somerset!
Big Carl, also known as the Saracen's crane or SGC-250 is 250m tall and can lift up to 5000 tonnes. It will be in place for the next four years and will dominate the skyline for a while as the Hinkley Point C power station is built. This giant crane will lift important pre-fabricated elements of the construction of the reactor building, including the dome tops towards the end of construction.

From this spot you can actually see the Hinkley Point A, B & C sites, giving you a view across history. The site in the middle as you look towards the sea is the Hinkley Point A (HPA), where there are two Magnox reactors being decommissioned. The site on the far right is Hinkley Point B (HPB), Two AGRs (Advanced Gas Cooled Reactors) which have now finished operation and are defuelling and the left site is the construction site for Hinkley Point C (HPC) which will be an EPR (European Pressurised Reactor). HPB & HPC sites are owned by EDF Energy, the HPA site being managed by the Nuclear Decommissioning Agency (NDA).
