Geocache Description:

This is a Mystery Cache consisting of 3 caches of which this is the final cache and you will need to find relevant information at the other two caches (GC8D6N6 “Marula” https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC8D6N6_marula?guid=a8236f35-e0b9-4763-a8f1-a69385f539f0 and GC8D6MW “Ships of the Desert” https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC8D6MW_ships-of-the-desert?guid=91ac0e69-719c-4c16-b2ce-7ad6ced09eca) before you can open this one.

The first two digits to the lock are at "Marula" and the last two digits at "Ship of the Desert"

The Kalahari-Oranje Museum is housed in the buildings built by the Reverend Schröder in 1875 as a church and mission station. Household items dating from that age and items relating to the history of Upington and the Lower Orange River can be seen here.  The museum is home to the life-sized statue of the donkey, sculptured in bronze by Hennie Potgieter. It represents the large contribution made by the donkey in developing the Lower Orange River Valley during the pioneer days (the early days of the 19th century).  Originally the town of Upington was called Olyfenhoudtsdrif (`Olive wood drift'), due to the very large olive wood trees in the area. Later renamed after Sir Thomas Upington, Attorney-General and then Prime Minister of the Cape.

This cache is about 50m from the donkey in a straight line (South) towards the bridge over the Orange River.  Permission to place and fix this cache has been obtained from the land owner.  The combination for the lock to get to this cache can be found at two other local caches viz: “Marula” and “Ships of the desert” or by trying various combinations using 9, 6, 4, and 2 as the one clue is missing due to upgrade at the SAPD .

This cache is large enough for trackables and swopables.

Please return the lock combination to 0000 when finished.

Thank you for visiting Upington and the Northern Cape.  Happy caching.
