The Tifereth Israel Cemetery is a Jewish burial site located in the northwest section of New Castle, Pennsylvania. It is located at the end of Maple Drive off of the Wilmington Road (Route 18) and adjoining the northern most property of the Jameson Memorial Hospital. It was once accessible via a long-abandoned entrance off of West Leasure Avenue.
The small conservative Hebrew congregation known as the Tifereth Isreal was formed in the 1870’s. In early 1898 the group was petitioning for the establishment of a Jewish cemetery and a lot was purchased soon after. In 1998, due to dwindling attendance, the congregation had no choice but to merge with that of the neighboring Temple Israel. The long discussed union of the two congregations was given the name of Temple Hadar Israel, which made the existing Tifereth Israel Synagogue its new home. The consolidation helped retain some vibrancy. Still, as the population continued to age and young people became scarce, it became difficult to gather a minyan, or quorum, for Shabbat services. Members began to consider the possibility of winding down synagogue operations. Ultimately, in 2017, the local congregation closed its doors. On the final day of 2017, synagogue members buried many of their historical artifacts and remnants, thus bringing a rich history to an end.
