Geocache Description:

Welcome to my historic geocaching tour of the Georgetown UNESCO Heritage waterfront, from the Esplanade to the Clan Jetties (or vice versa). I hope you enjoy a nice walk, learn some history and enjoy another geocaching adventure!

This is a nice pier and boardwalk with a quite relaxing feel. Its located next to the other Jettys along the coast. Its deep history and culture shines bright as you walk down the pier. Take note: it is closed on Mondays.

Lee Jetty is one of the clan jetties of George Town. It is the fourth jetty from the north, located between Tan Jetty and Mixed Clan Jetty.  It is also known in Penang Hokkien as Snaeh1 Lee4 Kio2.

The Lee Jetty housed the people of the Lee clan. They are the descendents of coolies who migrated enmasse to Penang from the village of Dui Shan Chan, in Tong Aun district, Quanzhou Prefecture, in Fujian Province, China, during the late 19th century. That was when George Town experienced a boom in its economy, and the eastern shore of George Town was reclaimed to create the new port area and the new waterfront road called Weld Quay.

The inhabitants of Lee Jetty originated from Fujian Province in southern China. When they first arrived in George Town, they inhabited the area off Stewart Lane.  The lane where they lived later became known as Boatmen Alley, due to their occupation. The Lee clan labourers lived there until such time that the Lee Jetty was created, when some of them then relocated to the jetty on the waterfront.

Geocache: Please use A LOT of stealth!! You don’t have to go in the boardwalk, but is a nice short walk after you find the cache!
