The land where this park sits was once part of the 3 mile by 3 mile piece of land which was given to the Potawatomi Indians as part of the Treaty of Detroit (1807). In the treaty, the land is described as where "...three miles square on the river Raisin, at a place called Macon, and where the river Macon falls into the river Raizin which place is about fourteen miles from the mouth of said river"
The land was occupied by the Potawatomi for only a couple of decades. By 1816, Lewis Cass, governor of the Northwest Territories and an Indian agent, started the efforts to remove tribes from southeastern Michigan. By September, 1827, the Macon Reserve was ceded to consolidate the bands of the Potawatomi in the Michigan Territory. The tribes were forced out of Monroe and Wayne counties once the Indiana Removal Act was signed in 1830.
North of the Park on Bigelow Rd (see waypoints) there is a roadside marker dedication to the Potawatomi burial grounds.
The cache:, a medium sized lock & lock, is located in West County Park. It contains the usual assortment of swag, logbook, etc.
PARK RULES:
- HOURS: Monroe County Parks will be closed between sunset and 8:00 a.m.
- All pets must be on a 6 foot or less leash at all times.
- Horseback riding on designated bridle paths only. Horses must be handled responsibly.
- No fishing or hunting allowed except where clearly designated.
- No camping except by "special permit".
