Geocache Description:

Enford Village

The beautiful village of Enford can trace its roots back to the 10th century where it was mentioned in the Saxon Charter of 934.  Originally known as ‘Enedford’ which means ‘ford of the ducks’ the parish today encompasses not only Enford village but also the local villages and hamlets of Compton, Fifield, East Chisenbury, West Chisenbury, Littlecott, New Town, Longstreet and Coombe.

Whilst in the village why not take 10 minutes to visit All Saint’s Church.  The beautiful building you see today dates back to the 13th century although there are some sections which are much older, the church is indirectly mentioned in the doomsday book of 1086 suggesting it was originally of Saxon origin.

Another village highlight is The Swan, this local village pub housed in a thatched 17th century building is one of the few public houses in the UK to retain a sign hung across the width of the road.  A popular spot with both locals and visitors alike it can get very busy during the summer evenings and during Sunday lunch.  Extra care will be required if visiting the cache during these times due to the increased number of people and traffic likely to be passing through the centre of the village.

Cache

The cache itself is a cleverly disguised micro cache that shouldn’t present too many difficulties for the keen observer.  The cache is in an easily accessible location and parking should be no problem.  However, a pair of tweezers will be required to extract the log from its container.  Please take care to return the cache to the same spot from which it was found.

Happy Geocaching!
