Geocache Description:

Kiwiscot had the fortune recently of visiting Whangape (Whanga-pe) and staying at nearby Kotahitanga Marae (-35°19.963 173°13.536) on a Surf Life Saving Club camp.

During the traditional Māori welcome - the pōwhiri, the Kaumatua broke the ice with the following comments:

"Bloody hell! I have never seen so many pakeha faces here in my whole life. I do not know who you are or what you are doing here but Welcome to the End of the World."

Not surprisingly we all cracked up laughing.

The cache is hidden beside the harbour on Whangape Rd. Cell phone coverage is pretty much non existant here unless you climb to the top of the hills. Whangape Rd is a gravel road barely one lane wide in parts so please take care.

For those without a proper GPS you can still locate the cache:

As you drive along the road with the harbour on your left your will come to a small patch of grass (tiny paddock) between the road and water with broken fences. Just past this paddock is a parking bay. In one corner you will find a tree and hopefully the cache.

Across the water you will see a church - Holy Trinity Mehopa Northlands

Check it out on google maps (street view) beforehand if unsure.

We hope you enjoy your visit to the end of the world as much as we did. Everyone on surf camp had a great time staying here. All the locals we met were very friendly and welcoming.

We would love to see photo's of your visit. Happy caching smiley

Some pieces of interest we learned on this visit:

There is a WWI memorial at Kotahitanga Marae (-35°19.963 173°13.536)

Bill Rowling who was the 30th Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1974 to 1975 was the teacher at the local school in his younger days.

The Kaumatua of Kotahitanga Marae sparred with Muhammad Ali when he visited NZ in 1979. The local community raised funds for him to attend Muhammad Ali's funeral on the 10th of June 2016 in Louisville, Kentucky, US of A.
