[ITA] LA PASSERELLA SULLA TOCE
Un tempo, in assenza di ponti, la barca era l’unico mezzo per passare da una sponda all’altra del fiume Toce. Fin dai tempi antichi, tra la sponda di Ornavasso e quella di Candoglia esisteva un servizio di traghetto per persone, bestie e merci. Sulle carte ottocentesche era riportato con un tratteggio e veniva raffigurata anche la barca. Il primo porto che esisteva in alto sul Toce era a Roledo di Montecrestese e l’ultimo era il Basso di Fondotoce. In mezzo vi erano i porti di Masera, Beura, Cardezza, Masone, Dresio, Megolo, Anzola, Cuzzago, Migiandone, Candoglia e Mergozzo. All’attracco c’era un sistema di pali e di anelli che trattenevano il filo (gamello) che attraversava il fiume. I nocchieri si chiamavano navaröi in dialetto locale ed erano importanti personaggi della comunità, in quanto era un lavoro particolarmente ambito. Durante il giorno, il traghettatore stazionava sulla sponda e chi voleva essere traghettato lo chiamava col classico “Navaröo”.
Nel 1922 iniziò il cantiere della passarella tra Ornavasso e Candoglia. La passerella era sorretta da funi metalliche con passaggio in assito in legno. Fu terminata nel 1925 e battezzata da un prete con la bottiglia, come con le barche nuove; la madrina era la signora Teresa Tazzini, dama milanese che possedeva una villa a Candoglia, poi della famiglia Cagnoli. Con la passerella finì la storia dei navaröi, i nocchieri del Toce.
La nuova passerella sul fiume Toce è stata realizzata tra il 2002 ed il 2006 a sostituzione della vecchia, ormai inagibile, ed inaugurata nell’aprile 2006; è di tipo strallato in cemento armato, a campata unica di luce (lunga 101,90m e larga 2,68m).

[ENG] FOOTBRIDGE ON THE RIVER TOCE
In the past, when still there were no bridges, boats were the only way to move across the banks of river Toce. Since ancient times, a ferry service operated between the banks of Ornavasso and Candoglia to transport people, animals and goods. On 19th-century maps, this route was marked with a crosshatch and a boat was also depicted. The first bridge met moving downstream was that of Roledo in Montecrestese and the last one that of Basso in Fondotoce. Between these, there were harbours in Masera, Beura, Cardezza, Masone, Dresio, Megolo, Anzola, Cuzzago, Migiandone, Candoglia and Mergozzo. At the mooring, there was a system of poles and rings that held the rope (gamello) that crossed the river. The helmsmen were called navaröi in the local dialect and they were important figures in the community, as theirs was a particularly coveted work. During the day, the ferryman waited on the riverbank on those who wanted to be ferried across called him with the typical "Navaröo”.
In 1922, construction works for the footbridge between Ornavasso and Candoglia began. This footbridge was suspended on wire ropes and had wooden floorboards. It was completed in 1925 and christened by a priest with a bottle, as it is the custom for new ships. The sponsor was Tersa Tazzini, a lady from Milan who owned a villa in Candoglia, later acquired by the Cagnoli family. With this footbridge, the tale of the navaröi, helmsmen of Toce, ended.
The new footbridge on the river Toce was built between 2002 and 2006 to replace the old one that had become unfit for use. It was inaugurated in April 2006 and it is of reinforced concrete, cable-stayed and single-span (length 101.9 m; width 2.68m).
