Geocache Description:

WARNING - I'm not too confident about the posted coordinates. Satellite signal was terrible at the GZ. I had a GPS, bike computer and a cell phone and the coordinates never matched. When any were close to matching the accuracy was +/- 25 - 30 feet. Because of this the HINT will be very descriptive.

I recently went for a hike in this park and there is an excellent loop trail here. The trail system may still be under construction but the work that has been completed up to this point is fantastic. The trailhead starts right at the parking lot. The trail will take you to the GZ vicinity. NO bushwhacking is necessary. If you allow ample time when you search for this cache, I recommend hiking the entire loop. Trail map is posted on the message board at the parking lot. The trail will take you down to and along Deer Creek where there are remains from some stone structures. One small section of this trail will pass through an area containing a large quantity of the quartz that is mentioned in the info. below.

Info. from the Palmer State Park website:

Husband Flint Mill

Originally built in the late 1800s by Joshua Husband, this historic mill was purchased by George J. Kroeger and rebuilt in 1909. The mill ground quartz, mined from quarries in the surrounding hills, for use in porcelain dishes and pottery. Before being dismantled in the 1920s, the mill was one of the best-equipped mills in the state of Maryland. Two kilns, a chimney, and part of the mill office are still visible today.

Deer Creek Iron Works

The forge was built in the middle 1800s and became a thriving community center with a general store and gristmill until the iron works ceased operations in 1878. The old foundation and covered bridge abutments are still visible today.

Cache contains a small special item for the First To Find. Take the item and please communicate a "thumbs up" or a "thumbs down". Good luck and enjoy the scenery but most of all HAVE FUN!

Happy Trails.
