Geocache Description:

This is a virtual cache. Look for a large, unexpected object sitting on the sidewalk and a Texas Historical Monument on a different topic nearby.

This is the first of what we hope will be a series of Alchemy Caches. No, you are not looking for the Philosopher's Stone and you will not learn to change lead into gold. These will be examples of unusual and hopefully fun or interesting chemistry trivia.

This cache celebrates the large object sitting on the sidewalk at these coordinates. The largest mine for this material in North America, and one of the largest in the world, is about a mile south of this location. It is estimated this mine contains enough of this material that it could meet the world's needs for the next 20,000 years. It is the source of the town's name and its production is still a major contributor to the economy of the area. This mineral is the oldest and most continuously produced commercial mineral in Texas. It was first produced at this site by Cherokee Indians in 1834.

Look for the large object, although be aware that it may become smaller as it rains. We were reassured that they periodically replace it as it dissolves. Note that the building behind it is made of the same material! It is the only building in the United States made of this material. If you have the time, check out the small free museum in this unusual building. They have pictures, displays, and some free handouts. Unless you strike up a conversation with the helpful, well-versed lady behind the counter, as we did, your tour of the museum should take only a few minutes. The museum is open Tuesday - Saturday, 8:30 am - 5 pm, but the object and the plaque may be viewed at any time.

To claim this cache, email us with the answers to the following questions:

1. What are the large object and the building both made of?

2. Also in front of the building is a plaque commemorating one of the town's famous citizens. What substance did he pioneer a new use for?
