This cache combines three elements that we find interesting - Civil War history, cemeteries and field puzzles. This cache is available dawn to dusk only.
The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration awarded to military members who distinguish themselves by acts of valor. Today there are three distinct medal designs for the Medal of Honor, one each for the Navy, Army and Air Force. The Medal of Honor originated during the first year of the Civil War when the Chairman on the Committee on Naval Affairs submitted a Bill to Congress to establish a medal recognizing Navy petty officers, seamen, landsmen, and marines that most distinguish themselves by their gallantry in action. The Bill was approved, and signed into law by President Lincoln on 12/21/1861. The following year a resolution to establish a Medal of Honor for the Army was submitted to Congress, and signed into law on 07/12/1862.
Now for this cache. There are several Civil War veterans buried in western Pennsylvania who were awarded the Medal of Honor. The posted coordinates will bring you to the grave site of one of these veterans marked by both a bronze plaque near ground level and a headstone. He served in the Pennsylvania Cavalry and was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on December 1, 1864 at Stony Creek Station, Virginia. His citation reads:
His horse having been shot from under him, he voluntarily and on foot participated in the cavalry charge made upon one of the forts, conducting himself throughout with great personal bravery.
To obtain the final coordinates you will need information from the bronze plaque and the nearby head stone (behind you) to answer the following questions:
A = The third digit in the year of his death.
B = The number of letters in his wife’s first name.
C = The regimental number of the Pennsylvania Cavalry.
D = The first letter of his middle name where A=1 to Z=26.
E = The second digit in the year of his death.
F = The last digit in the year of his death.
Coordinates for the final are N40° 27.ABC and W80° 15.DEF
To check your solution: A+B+C+D+E+F = 24
