In December 1833, the Georgia state legislature granted a charter to the Monroe Railroad Company for the purpose of building a rail line between Forsyth and Macon. Almost exactly 5 years later, on Dec. 10,1838, the first train arrived from Macon, loaded with dignitaries who toasted the success of the endeaver and shared a banquet with the citizens of Forsyth. Sadly the last train ran around 1972.
The beautiful old train station was turned into the Monroe County Museum and Genelogy, operated by the historical society. It is open from 9-4, Wednesday-Friday.The museum houses a lot of nice artifacts from days gone by. Admission is free. Museum does not have to be open to get the cache. (Cache is not on the train). The historical society is aware of the cache.
For all you benchmark lovers, be sure to take some time to explore the outside of the building and you'll not only find a benchmark, you'll also find one of the Forsyth Foxes.
Across the Street from the Train station is Historic Tift College. Tift college was a private liberal arts women's college located in Forsyth. Founded in 1849, it ceased operations in 1987, after being merged with Mercer University in nearby Macon. It is now the central office for the GA Department of Corrections.
You are looking for a magnetic Key holder. (Not on the train)
