En la cumbre de la Sierra de Aras, a 863 metros de altura y a seis kilómetros de Lucena se encuentra la Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Araceli. Es un impresionante santuario barroco que guarda la imagen de la patrona de Lucena, Nuestra Señora de Araceli, traída de Roma por el segundo Marqués de Comares, Don Luís Fernández de Córdoba, en 1562. Es patrona de Lucena y del Campo Andaluz, y es de gran devoción en todo el centro de Andalucía.
Iglesia. El edificio es hoy en día un complejo que ha ido creciendo en torno a la Iglesia y está dotado de una armoniosa belleza popular. El templo se construyó en lo esencial entre 1600 y 1603, pero sufrió reformas ya desde el último cuarto del siglo XVII. Sobre la belleza poética de los muros enjabelgados se destacan al exterior las labores de sillería y mampuesto correspondientes a la espadaña, construida en 1726 por Andrés Antonio del Pino, y el conjunto de la portada, realizado en 1765 por Martín de Rojas.
Mirador. Si por algo destaca especialmente esta privilegiada atalaya es por las amplias panorámicas que nos permite disfrutar. Desde el santuario se pueden ver hasta 5 provincias andaluzas: Málaga, Córdoba, Sevilla, Granada y Jaén, y en días claros, la costa marroquí. Ante esta magnífica visión escribió el premio Nobel don Camilo José Cela: "El vagabundo, antes de entrar en Lucena, prefirió verla -en compañía de todo lo que desde allí se ve-, subido al santuario de Araceli, la atalaya de uno de los más bellos paisajes españoles. El vagabundo, desde su alto mirador, se sintió poderoso como nunca y también vagamente feliz. El andar por los caminos brinda, de vez en vez, gozos que no podrían comprarse con dinero."
Romería. El Santuario cobra especial relevancia en los tiempos de romería, de subida y bajada, de la virgen a la ciudad. El penúltimo domingo del mes de abril tiene lugar la “Romería de Bajada” de María Santísima de Araceli, que permanecerá en la parroquia de San Mateo durante la celebración de las fiestas aracelitanas. El primer domingo de junio, la “Romería de Subida” al santuario de Aras pone el punto final a las fiestas. La noche del sábado anterior a la romería, con la Virgen ya en sus andas de plata, se celebra una emotiva eucaristía de despedida. A las 7,30 del domingo, tras la misa de romeros, la procesión inicia la marcha seguida de caballistas y carrozas bellamente adornadas. Pero es el pueblo quien toma las andas y emprende el camino de regreso hacia la cumbre, a la que se llega sobre las tres del mediodía. Ya en el santuario los romeros despiden a la Patrona y la dejarán señoreando el campo andaluz desde la riqueza barroca de su camarín.
En el año 2001 fue escenario de algunas escenas rodadas en esta ermita de la película “Hable con ella” del director Pedro Almodóvar.

At the summit of the Sierra de Aras, 863 meters high and six kilometers from Lucena is the Hermitage of Our Lady of Araceli. Pilgrimage. The Sanctuary becomes especially important in the times of pilgrimage, ascent and descent, from the virgin to the city. On the penultimate Sunday of April, the “Romería de Bajada” by María Santísima de Araceli takes place, which will remain in the parish of San Mateo during the celebration of the Aracelitan festivities. On the first Sunday of June, the “Romería de Ascent” to the sanctuary of Aras puts the end to the festivities. On the night of the Saturday before the pilgrimage, with the Virgin already in her silver steps, an emotional farewell Eucharist is celebrated. At 7:30 on Sunday, after the rosemary mass, the procession begins the march followed by horsemen and beautifully decorated floats. But it is the people who take the steps and take the road back to the summit, which is reached at three in the afternoon.
