En este pequeño estanque, al pie de una pared de piedra caliza donde se encuentra una representación de la patrona de Cabra, la Virgen de la Sierra, se puede decir que tiene nacimiento efectivo el rio Cabra. Este origen kárstico provoca, por ejemplo, que casi la totalidad del agua de lluvia que cae sobre el Lapiaz de los Lanchares, en la cercana Sierra de Cabra, emerja en cotas inferiores como ésta a unos 5 kilómetros de distancia.
La Fuente del Río, en el extremo sureste del núcleo urbano de Cabra, es un claro ejemplo de paraje natural sujeto a los cambios materializados por la mano del hombre. Una zona donde confluye el carácter natural de un manantial típico del sistema kárstico con el valor ornamental de los jardines y árboles, configurando un espacio de gran interés paisajístico que le ha valido diferentes catalogaciones como la de 'Bien de Interés Cultural' (B.I.C.) 'Sitio de Interés Natural' o 'Arboleda Singular'.
Hay noticias de la captación de estas aguas desde tiempos de los romanos, aunque no queda ningún vestigio del importante acueducto de unos 8 kms. que debía abastecer a la antigua población de Igabrum. Se trata de uno de los lugares con encanto más importantes del Parque Natural de las Sierras Subbéticas, además de estar muy cerca de la Vía Verde de la Subbética, la cual es ideal para hacer senderismo y cicloturismo.
Acceso en coche: Desde la carretera que pasa junto al paraje no hay acceso para vehículos, por lo que debemos dirigirnos al aparcamiento del anexo Auditorio Municipal o al más reducido del propio recinto al que se entra desde el N.
