The Church
Sowerby St Peters stands fairly central in the village of Sowerby at the junction of two roads.
A chapel of ease was established here around 1592 and the current building was built between 1763 and 1766 by John Wilson. The old chapel was dismantled to make way for the new church, The belfry, windows and other features from the old chapel were bought by a local man and moved to nearby Field House.
The design of the current church is based upon Holy Trinity, Leeds. It is said to be one of the finest examples of a Georgian church outside of London. The Church opened on 3rd January 1763, but was not completed until 1766. The tower was added in 1781. It was consecrated in 1847 by the Bishop of Ripon. It cost £2,900 to build. In 1878, the interior was restored, and a new organ chamber was built in the chancel, along with a new vestry, and new pews were installed. The walls and gate-piers are listed.

Make your way to the noticeboard at the published coordinates - you should be able to see the entrance to the building (Please note there is another noticeboard near the road junction - this isn't the one I used, though the information appears to be the same).
