La Torre del Mulinaccio fu costruita dagli Spagnoli nel tardo Cinquecento, con lo scopo iniziale di controllare l'insenatura in cui oggi sorge il porto di Cala Galera. Considerata la sua posizione sul promontorio e la sua ubicazione tra lo strapiombo a nord e l''imponente Forte Filippo a sud, da dove era pienamente visibili, fu decisa la sua trasformazione in un mulino a vento (che le ha conferito la denominazione), che risultava in piena attività durante il periodo settecentesco. In seguito, attorno alla struttura difensiva fu realizzata una cortina muraria di forma poligonale a sua completa protezione, nasce così il Forte Santa Caterina. Da allora, le funzioni di avvistamento si svolsero all'interno dell'area all'aperto racchiusa dalla cortina muraria di cinta.
Il forte si presenta con possenti e spesse cortine murarie a scarpa, a tratti rivestite in pietra e a tratti in intonaco scialbato, che inglobano sul lato opposto al mare, una serie di fabbricati uno dei quali munito di terrazza sommitale per svolgere le funzioni di avvistamento. Le cortine murarie presentano altre aperture (feritoie e finestre), dove un tempo erano collocate le cannoniere. Ad ognuno dei due angoli rivolti verso il mare, si trova un posto di guardia a sezione semicircolare, privo di copertura, poggiante su una mensola sporgente a forma di semicono rovesciato. L'accesso al fabbricato avviene attraverso una porta ad arco, che si apre presso il rivellino, sopra la quale si apre una finestra rettangolare; nella parte alta è collocato uno stemma dello Stato dei Presidi. All'interno del complesso sorgeva originariamente anche una polveriera, oltre ai locali adibiti agli alloggi delle guarnigioni militari.
Alla fine del secolo, la struttura svolse il ruolo di infermeria per i prigionieri che venivano detenuti al forte Filippo, oggi invece è di proprietà privata ed è in ottime condizioni.
Per raggiungere la cache bisogna percorrere una stretta e semi asfaltata strada fin dove termina, poco oltre il piccolo parcheggio coperto inizia un sentiero che in breve esce dalla macchia, con un bel affaccio su Cala Galera, Forte Filippo e Porto Ercole, siete giunti nella zona della cache.

The Torre del Mulinaccio was built by the Spaniards in the late sixteenth century, with the initial aim of controlling the creek where today the port of Cala Galera stands. Given its position on the promontory and its location between the northern cliff and the imposing Filippo Fort in the south, from where it was fully visible, it was decided to transform it into a windmill (which gave it its name), which was in full swing during the 18th century period. Later, around the defensive structure, a polygonal wall curtain was built to protect it completely, thus the Forte Santa Caterina was born. Since then, the sighting functions took place inside the outdoor area enclosed by the curtain wall.
The fort presents itself with powerful and thick curtain walls, sometimes covered in stone and sometimes in whitewashed plaster, which encompass a series of buildings on the opposite side to the sea, one of which is equipped with a summit terrace to perform the functions of sighting. The curtain walls have other openings (loopholes and windows), where once the gunboats were located. At each of the two corners facing the sea, there is a guard post with a semicircular section, without a cover, resting on a protruding shelf in the shape of an inverted semi-tone. Access to the building is through an arched door, which opens at the little ravelin, above which a rectangular window opens; in the upper part there is a coat of arms of the State of the Presidia. Inside the complex there was originally also a powder magazine, in addition to the rooms used for military garrison lodgings.
At the end of the century, the structure acted as an infirmary for prisoners who were detained at the fort Filippo, but today it is privately owned and is in excellent condition.
To reach the cache you have to go through a narrow and semi-asphalted road to where it ends, just beyond the small covered parking a path begins that soon comes out of the bush, with a beautiful view of Cala Galera, Forte Filippo and Porto Ercole, you have arrived in the area of the cache.
