Alamance County was formed in 1849 from Orange County to the east.  The county seat is Graham and the largest city is Burlington.  The county was named after the Great Alamance Creek, site of the Battle of Alamance on May 16, 1771.  According to legend, Great Alamance Creek was named after a local Native American word used to describe the blue mud found at the bottom of the creek.
