Anson County was formed in 1750 from Bladen County. The county seat is Wadesboro, which is also the largest city. The county was named for George Anson, a British admiral, who circumnavigated the globe from 1740 to 1744. Anson County was originally a vast territory with indefinite northern and western boundaries. The county was reduced over a period of about 90 years when portions of the county were taken to make Rowan in 1753, Mecklenburg in 1762, Montgomery and Richmond in 1779, and finally Union County in 1842.
