Avery County is the newest of North Carolina’s 100 counties.  It was formed in 1911 from parts of Caldwell, Mitchell, and Watauga counties.  The county seat is Newland and the largest city is Banner Elk.  The county was named for Waightstill Avery, a colonel in the American Revolutionary War and the first Attorney General of North Carolina. Avery County is extremely rural and mountainous with all of the county’s terrain located within the Appalachian Mountain range.
