Beaufort County was founded in 1705 as Pamptecough Precinct.  It was renamed Beaufort Precinct in 1712 and became Beaufort County in 1739.  The county seat is Washington, which is also the largest city.  The county was named for Henry Scudamore, 3rdDuke of Beaufort, who became one of the Lords Proprietor of Carolina around 1709.  Beaufort County is the fifth-largest county in North Carolina by total area.
