Cabarrus County was formed in 1792 from Mecklenburg County.  It was named after Stephen Cabarrus of Chowan County, who was speaker of the North Carolina House of Commons.  The first substantiated gold find in America happened in Cabarrus County in 1799. Conrad Reed found a gold chunk in Little Meadow Creek weighing 17 pounds.  Conrad’s father took it to a silversmith in Concord who informed him that the rock did not have any value.  The “rock” served as a doorstop for 3-years on the Reed farm before being sold for $3.50 in 1802.  News of the sale spurred the beginning of gold mining in the area.  The county seat is Concord, which is also the largest city.
