Caldwell County was formed in 1841 from parts of Burke County and Wilkes County. It was named for Joseph Caldwell, professor and the first president of the University of North Carolina. A series of reductions in the county’s territory resulted in the formation of Alexander County, Watauga County, Mitchell County, and Avery County. The county seat is Lenoir, which is also the largest city.
