Carteret County was created as Carteret Precinct in 1722 and gained county status in 1739.  It was named for Sir George Carteret, one of the 17thcentury English Lords proprietor, or for his descendant and heir John Carteret, 2ndEarl Granville.  In 1629 the first male of English parents was born in North Carolina in what is now Carteret County.  The county seat is Beaufort and the largest city is Morehead City.
