Caswell County was formed in 1777 from the northern portion of Orange County.  The county was named for Richard Caswell, Governor of North Carolina from 1776 to 1780.  In 1792, roughly the eastern half of Caswell County became Person County.  Leasburg was the first county seat.  Today, Yanceyville is the county seat and the largest town.
