Cherokee County was formed in 1839 from the western part of Macon County. It was named for the Cherokee Native Americans, some of whom still live in the area. Parts of Cherokee County were taken to form Clay County in 1861 and Graham County in 1872. The county seat is Murphy and the largest town is Andrews. Cherokee County is the westernmost county in North Carolina.
