Chowan County was formed in 1670 as a precinct, originally called Shaftesbury, in Albemarle County. By 1685 it had been renamed for the Chowan Indian tribe.  Chowan Precinct gained county status in 1739.  The county seat is Edenton, which is also the largest town.  During the Civil War, William Badham Jr formed the Albemarle Artillery in Edenton.  The men of the artillery recast cannons from bronze bells donated by local courthouses and churches.  The unit was renamed the Edenton Bell Battery.
