Columbus County was formed in 1808 from parts of Bladen and Brunswick counties.  Named for Christopher Columbus, the county was formed by an Act of the General Assembly because of the difficulties of the inhabitants getting to a county seat to transact business.  The county seat is Whiteville, which is also the largest city.
