Cumberland County was formed in 1754 from Bladen County.  It was named for Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, a captain-general of the British army and victorious commander at eh Battle of Culloden. Parts of Cumberland County were taken to form Wake County in 1771, Moore County in 1784, Harnett County in 1855, and Hoke County in 1911.  The county seat is Fayetteville, which is also the largest city.
