Dare County is the easternmost county in North Carolina. It was formed in 1870 and named after Virginia Dare, the first child born in America to English parents. Dare County is considered the largest county in North Carolina because it includes much of the Pamlico Sound. However, if you were to only consider land area, it drops down to 68thin size among the 100 North Carolina counties. The county seat is Manteo and the largest town is Kill Devil Hills. Dare County is home to two popular lighthouses: The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Dare County is also home to the Wright Brothers National Memorial, which commemorates the first successful, sustained, powered flights in a heavier than air machine.
