Guilford County was formed in 1771 from parts of Rowan and Orange counties.  It is named for Francis North, 1stEarl of Guilford, who was the father of Frederick North, British Prime Minister from 1770 to 1782. The county seat is Greensboro, which is also the largest city.

On March 15, 1781, during the American Revolution, the Battle of Guilford Court House was fought just north of Greensboro between General Cornwallis and Nathanael Greene. This battle marked a turning point in the Revolutionary War in the South.  Although General Cornwallis, the British Commander, held the field at the end of the battle, his losses were so severe that he decided to withdraw to the coastline, where he could gather reinforcements from the navy.  He then led his ravished army north into Virginia, which eventually led to his defeat and surrender in October 1781 at Yorktown, Virginia.
