Johnston County was formed in 1746 from Craven County.  It is named for Gabriel Johnston, Governor of North Carolina rom 1734 to 1752.  Parts of Johnston County were taken to form Orange County in 1752, Dobbs County in 1758, Wake County in 1770, and Wilson County in 1855.  The county seat is Smithfield and the largest town is Clayton.
