New Hanover County was formed in 1729 as New Hanover Precinct of Bath County. With the abolition of Bath County in 1739, the precinct officially became a county. Parts of New Hanover County were taken to form Duplin County in 1750, Brunswick County in 1764, and Pender County in 1875. New Hanover County was named for the House of Hanover, a German royal family then ruling in Great Britain. The county seat is Wilmington, which is also the largest city.
