Onslow County was formed in 1734. It is named for Arthur Onslow, the longest serving Speaker of the British House of Commons. After a lethal hurricane in 1752, the county courthouse was relocated from Town Port to Wantland’s Ferry. This settlement was eventually incorporated in 1842 and named Jacksonville, after President Andrew Jackson. The county seat is Jacksonville, which is also the largest city.
