Richmond County was formed in 1779 from Anson County. It was named for Charles Lennox, 3ed Duke of Richmond and Lennox who was a member of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. In 1899 the southeastern part of the county was organized as Scotland County. The county seat is Rockingham, which is also the largest city.
