Rowan County was formed in 1753 from the northern part of Anson County. It was named for Matthew Rowan, acting governor of North Carolina from 1753 to 1754. Rowan County was originally a vast territory with an indefinite western boundary. Reductions to the counties size began in 1770 when parts of the county were taken to form Guilford County. Reductions continued with parts used to form Surry County in 1771, Burke County in 1777, Iredell County in 1788, Davidson County in 1822, and finally Davie County in 1836. The county seat is Salisbury, which is also the largest city.
