Yancey County was formed in 1833 from parts of Burke and Buncombe counties. It was named in honor of one of North Carolina’s most distinguished statesmen, Bartlett Yancey, who was a U.S. Congressman and speaker of the N.C. Senate. The county seat is Burnsville, which is also its largest town.
