Os Jesuítas são uma ordem religiosa católica (Companhia de Jesus) fundada por Santo Inácio de Loiola há quase 500 anos. A sua presença em Portugal data desde o início da sua fundação, tendo tido um papel fundamental nas missões portuguesas por todo o mundo. Não sendo uma ordem conventual, caracterizam-se por viver no meio do mundo, dando especial atenção, na sua ação pastoral à educação, ciência e cultura.

Os Jesuítas foram enviados para as colónias portuguesas, espanholas e francesas, e expandiram a sua veia missionária da religião à cultura, criando uma vasta herança de envolvimento com os vários aspetos da cultura moderna.

Hoje em dia há cerca de 16 mil Jesuítas espalhados por 120 países do mundo, dedicados às mais variadas missões pastorais, desde a academia, às ciências, ao trabalho com os mais pobres (em especial os refugiados), os jovens, passando pela espiritualidade e o diálogo inter-religioso.

Dentro do Brotéria, existe a Sala dos Couros, o ex-líbris do edifício, com paredes totalmente forradas a couro trabalhado.

O Brotéria encontra-se aberto à cidade num horário fixo de segunda a sábado entre as 10h e as 18h. (Entrada gratuita)

The Jesuits are a Catholic religious order (Society of Jesus) founded by St Ignatius of Loiola almost 500 years ago. Its presence in Portugal dates back to the beginning of its foundation, having played a key role in Portuguese missions around the world. Not being a conventual order, they are characterized by living in the middle of the world, paying special attention, in their pastoral action to education, science and culture.

The Jesuits were sent to the Portuguese, Spanish and French colonies, and expanded their missionary vein from religion to culture, creating a vast heritage of involvement with the various aspects of modern culture.

Today there are about 16,000 Jesuits spread throughout 120 countries of the world, dedicated to the most varied pastoral missions, from academia, to science, to working with the poorest (especially refugees), young people, spirituality and interreligious dialogue.

Inside the Brotéria, there is the Leather Room, the former líbris of the building, with walls fully lined with worked leather. Brotéria is open to the city on a fixed schedule from Monday to Saturday between 10:00 and 18:00. (Free admission)
