Thomas Earl Petty was born October 20, 1950, in Gainesville, Florida. His interest in rock and roll music began at age ten when he met Elvis Presley. In a 2006 interview, Petty said he knew he wanted to be in a band the moment he saw the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. He dropped out of high school at age 17 to play bass with his newly formed band. In an interview in 2014, Petty stated that the Rolling Stones were "my punk music". He credited the group with inspiring him by demonstrating that he and musicians like him could make it in rock and roll.

Tom Petty became an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, and actor (check out his cameo in 1997’s “The Postman” with Kevin Costner and Olivia Wilde!). He was the lead vocalist and guitarist of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, formed in 1976. In the early 1980s he joined forces with Stevie Nicks, releasing the hit “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around”, which was subsequently parodied by “Weird Al” Yankovic. Tom Petty had previously led the band Mudcrutch, and was also a member of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys (which included Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne).

Petty recorded a number of hit singles with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist. His hit singles with the Heartbreakers include "Don't Do Me Like That" (1979), "Refugee" (1980), "The Waiting" (1981), "Don't Come Around Here No More" (1985) and "Learning to Fly" (1991). Petty's hit singles as a solo act include "I Won't Back Down" (1989), "Free Fallin'" (1989), and "You Don't Know How It Feels" (1994).

Even his not-so-successful singles have been influential: “American Girl” (1976), "Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll" (1977), “Even the Losers” (1980), “You Got Lucky” (1982), “Change of Heart” (1983) and more. His music videos were staples of MTV’s early success. In his career, he sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Tom Petty died on October 2, 2017, one week after the end of the Heartbreakers' 40th Anniversary Tour.

The song “Cabin Down Below” is from his 1994 album, “Wildflowers”. Four singles were released from the album between 1994 and 1995, the most successful of which, "You Don't Know How It Feels", reached No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Album Rock Tracks chart for one week. It was followed by "You Wreck Me", "It's Good to Be King" and "A Higher Place" which reached Nos. 2, 6, and 12 respectively on the Mainstream Rock chart.

Originally, the album “Wildflowers” was intended to be a double album with 25 songs, but Warner Bros. Records suggested that it was too long. Petty's family and bandmates arranged for an October 2020 re-release of the album that includes these deleted songs, demos, and live tracks entitled “Wildflowers & All the Rest.” The super deluxe edition of the box set includes a fifth disc of alternate versions of the “Wildflowers” tracks.  For more about this project, there’s a Rolling Stone Magazine article about it: (visit link).

The First-To-Find prize is a collectible coin rarer than our usual leave, a Roosevelt dime from Denver in 1950, the year Tom Petty was born. The Roosevelt dime is the current dime, or ten-cent piece, of the USA. Struck by the United States Mint continuously since 1946, it displays President Franklin D. Roosevelt on the obverse and was authorized soon after his death in 1945. Roosevelt had been stricken with polio, and was one of the moving forces of the March of Dimes. The ten-cent coin could be changed by the Mint without the need for congressional action, so officials moved quickly to replace the previous design, the "Mercury" dime. Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock prepared models, but faced repeated criticism from the Commission of Fine Arts. He modified his design in response, and the coin went into circulation in January 1946. The coin is .900 silver, so please take good care of it. Congrats again to NayborLady for the FTF honors, she snapped it up like a Florida 'Gator!
