Geocache Description:

Plenty of parking along the highway, on both sides. If you go for this while heading north, there is lots of visibility in both directions, so crossing the highway should not be too difficult or dangerous, just look and listen. There is also room for one or two vehicles in a dirt area along the "driveway". DO NOT BLOCK THE GATE!

There used to be a cache around here: GPS0102 (GC1J1XG). It was archived some time back; time for a replacement!

Interesting strata across the highway

This is a two-stage multi-cache that will require you to either project a waypoint with your GPSr from the given coordinates, or use a compass, and your GPSr as a "ruler". The area beyond the fence is an abandoned storage area. We were told that, many years ago, a couple of picnic tables were in here, but there is certainly no sign of such now. There is nothing in the old facility but a few folding signs and a pile of dirt: there is no reason to enter, and you will not go within 100 feet of it on your hunt, so PLEASE STAY OUT. NOTE: this is public USFS land.

To find the cache, do the following...

A) Go around the gate, on the right side, following the use path.

B) Once past the gate, turn around, so that the highway is in front of you and the gate is between you and the highway. The given coordinates are on the right-hand gate post: hold your GPSr as close as you can to the post.

C) You now have two options:

1] If your gadget has the ability to project a waypoint, then the cache is 155 feet (47.5 meters) from the post, at a bearing of 44º true. Subtract 12º for Magnetic North.

2} If your gizmo is unable to project a waypoint, then use the given coordinates as the center of a circle 155 feet (47.5 meters) in diameter. Use a compass (a pocket compass will be best; the one in your GPSr will also work, but this is more awkward and not as accurate) to determine the direction to the cache: 44º true, 32º magnetic.

USEFUL NOTE FOR THIS AND SIMILAR CACHES: if the cache is at xº from a point, and x is equal to or less than 180, then the point will be 180º+xº from the cache. If x is greater than 180, then the point will be xº-180º from the cache. This "reverse engineering" will be helpful if projecting a waypoint is not possible.

Whichever method you use, you will NOT be able to travel in a straight line to the cache: please do not try. Follow the paved surface. And observe the trees: most of them are oaks and pines, with a few junipers here and there, which were likely planted. The cache is in none of those trees; it *is* in the crotch of a different tree, about five feet off the ground, with lots of leaves and a few small sticks to protect it, not that this is likely to be discovered by accident. You will need to walk through some grasses, small rocks and such to get to the correct tree. No poison oak, in any stage of growth, was seen anywhere near the cache, but the stuff is sneaky, so watch for it, anyway, just in case. No ants or bees were seen in/on the tree, but one never knows... The walk is not difficult, but be careful of your footing. Strollers and wheelchairs will be unable to access the tree, and won't easily get past the gate at all.

The cache is a small container (gelato?) wrapped in black tape; we repurposed it from a cache that was archived, but which owner abandoned the container. It has room for small travelers (we left one of ours in it) and some swag. No pen, however, so bring your own (which really should go without saying).

Have fun looking for those trees not like the others Please do not hesitate to point out any issues, current or potential, with this cache. We have never seen anyone using this area, but that could change; if you see workers there, please do not attempt this cache and PLEASE post a Note about this, so that we can respond quickly. Thank you!
