Geocache Description:


Sandstone is one of many Sedimentary Rocks of Missouri. It is composed of sands grains glued together by quartz, calcite, or hematite mineral cement. The color varies from white to brown. Beds might contain crossbedding or riple marks formed by currents or waves. There may be tracks or trace fossils on bed surfaces but these are not common.

Cave Hollow Park in Warrensburg, Missouri, preserves outcrops of Warrensburg Channel Sandstone, which was deposited in a river channel in Middle Pennsylvanian time. The sandstone channel has been traced for more than fifty miles from the Missouri River bluffs near Dover almost to Clinton in Henry County. The outcrops in Cave Hollow Park are one of the best place to see it.

As you approach the coordinates you will see the outcrop in the picture below. Inside this shallow opening you will see the Sandstone described above. You will also see a good example of crossbedding which has visible bands of iron oxide stains in the rock.
