The Principal Breeding Station for the Biological Campaign Against Prickly Pear. In August 1923, of the 3 field stations for the program, (Westwood, Biniguy NSW, & Chinchilla) the Chinchilla Field Station became the Principal Breeding Station.
Not to be confused with the Cactoblastus Memorial Hall in Boonarga, or the plaques in Dalby, the Cactoblastus Monument Chinchilla "stands at the site of the Prickly Pear Board 'Bug Farm' that introduced 3000 Cactoblastus eggs from Beunos Aires in 1924." (Western Downs Regional Council brochure 'History and Heritage Trail'.
The monument includes a shade structure which was donated by Chinchilla Lions Club. As well as an interesting display sharing a wealth of history regarding the battle against prickly pear, there is a picnic table. No lights in the shelter, so bring a torch if hunting in the dark.
