Geocache Description:

10 November 2019, 11:00 - 15:00

Continue Landscape Maintenance on One Tree Island in Henley Lake

Location:  Henley Lake, Masterton

Date:  Sunday 10 November 2019.  In the event of bad weather, event will be postponed to 17 November.

Time:  11am-3pm

CITO Activity:

1. Continue the transformation of One Tree Island by clearing weeds around native tree plantings, i.e. weed-release young trees;

2. Selective removal of green 'gro-tectors' where they are beginning to inhibit growth of the young trees;

3. Removal of miscellaneous weeds, especially blackberry and thistle, by spade or grubber.

* * * * * Power-boat transport provided to and from the island * * * * *

* * * * * There are no facilities (loo, drinking water, tables, etc.) on the island, but are available near the boatramp. * * * * *

Those without water craft may arrive at the boat ramp (1st waypoint) any time from 10:50, where Stewart will ferry up to three people at a time across to the island to start work.

Thanks to Jamie Ticehurst, then Merv Brown and most recently to Renall Doors, almost every tree planted on the island is marked by a stake.  The only unmarked plants are some mountain flaxes and miscellaneous native grasses.

Many of the green plastic gro-tectors providing shelter mainly to the manuka seedlings planted at the last CITO event in August 2018 have done their job well and can now be removed to allow the trees to strengthen and grow out (as well as up).  THE STAKES WILL BE LEFT IN PLACE IN THE MEANTIME.

We seem to have conquered the Fireweed that blanketed the island last year but pockets of blackberry and thistles are attempting to colonise bare patches.  Control at this stage should be adequate by physical removal using a spade or grubber.

Equipment requirements:

  • gardening gloves (optional)
  • garden trowel for weeding
  • spade and/or grubber
  • gumboots for wading to and from the 'ferry'
  • fresh water for drinking
  • lunch/snacks
