807,701 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ardmorlocks: We are archiving because the geocache site has been vandalized.

A container holding the 'red herring' mentioned in the geocache description had been smashed. There was additional information (missing now) within the herring's container whose purpose was to point geocachers to the cache/puzzle which contained the log a few inches away.

The cache itself had been stolen.

Thanks,
Ardmorlocks

Geocache Description:

This is our second neighborhood geocache in Shorewood, WI. We currently favor urban rather than park or trail locations. The cache is based on H.G. Wells’ extraordinary novella, The Time Machine. The cache is located on a public parkway and the house owner at this site has given permission for its placement.

This geocache will allow access to the log when a puzzle is solved. Be aware that a separate Red Herring is near which may assist in locating the cache. Please bring your own pencil to fill out the log.

We tip our hat to the Blue Crow Expedition geocachers for associating this location and our name in our previous GC8A4KC log which suggested the idea for this new geocache.

Background:

The Time Machine was published in 1895 and is a science fiction classic describing a very ancient earth and the decline of humanity…all told from a Victorian time traveler’s point of view.

The time traveler stops in the year 807,701 C.E. where he finds a warm, Eden-like environment. He comes across a group of graceful and child-like adult individuals. He rescues one of these persons from drowning while her companions idly watch her predicament and do nothing to help. The woman he saves is named Weena.

The time traveler explores this land and discovers another class of inhabitants, the Morlocks. These are hairy and brutish humans who live underground and surface only at night to obtain food. He speculates that the human race has evolved into two species: the leisured classes known in his own time have become the gentle and vacuous creatures like Weena, and the downtrodden working classes have become the fierce light-fearing Morlocks. The time traveler will eventually revise his view of these people living thousands of centuries in the future. For example, when the time traveler is exploring the palace of green porcelain, he discovers…. but it would be better if we recommend that you read the book to learn more.
