We came upon this viewing area while hunting caches and it was too good to not drop a cache of our own here. Looking in all directions you have Maungatapu close by then views out to Mt Richmond, Mt Fell, Mt Fishtail and further beyond that to the snow capped peaks of the Inland Kaikoura Range. In the other direction you have Tasman Bay and across to the Able Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks. All these give ample opportunites for photos to be posted with your log if you wish.
This cache is placed on the track just past the Dew Lakes. It seems to be little used by cachers as the existing caches along this track hadn't been found for 2-4 years prior to us collecting today. Hopefully by dropping a couple of extra caches along the way, we can get more people up to this area.
The track to this cache starts at the Maitai Dam, along with many other tracks, and heads up the hill to the Dew Lakes, passing the Rush Pools along the way. While the early part is a 4WD track (gate locked) it soons narrows down to a single file walking track, steep, rocky and slippery at times. In winter, there are some days that see snow on the track. Please take all normal precautions when heading out - correct clothing, food, water and leaving your intentions with someone. The weather can change quickly.
