Geocache Description:

Cowboy’s good friend, Brent, was east of Monticello and driving the Cortez-Moab Stagecoach.  Without warning, Brent heard a loud kaboom in the distance.  Before he could react, his hat went flying off as a bullet grazed his head.  Brent did not stop to look around.  He knew he might not be so lucky if there was another shot.

Cowboy was a good tracker and hunter. He also worked for the law occasionally arresting hard to find criminals.  Brent met Cowboy near the location of the bushwhacking.  Soon they found Brent’s hat with a large hole in it.  They calculated the direction the shot may have come from.  They knew the shooter was a long way off when he fired at Brent.

Cowboy soon found some tracks of a horse and followed them to a point where the rider dismounted from his horse.  After following the shooter’s footprints, Cowboy spotted a large bore rifle shell in a bush.  “This is a Sharps 50 caliber buffalo gun;  Brent, do you know anyone who shoots this kind of rifle?” Scratching his head, Brent said, ”Come to think of it, I had an old buffalo hunter I kicked off my stagecoach because he smelled so bad!”  Cowboy chuckled and said, “Well, Brent I will look around for a buffalo hunter in the nearby saloons.  I will have a talk with him and make sure this never happens again”.
