This is our fourth cache in a series planned to highlight monuments, historical places and buildings in Windhoek, some well known and some off the beaten track.
Windhoek has several cemeteries:
- Gammams Cemetery
- Heroe's Acre
- Oponganda Cemetery
- Katutura Cemetery
- Khomasal Cemetary
- Leutwein Cemetery / Old Location Cemetery
- Veronica Street Cemetery
The Gammams cemetary has various sections, including a Jewish cemetery and Commonwealth War Graves. More info on these can be found here: https://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cemetery/2058934/windhoek-new-municipal-cemetery/
The Gammams Cemetery is next to Gammams river and is located in Khomas, Namibia. The cemetery has a length of approximately 2 kilometres.
This cache will take you to the older section of the cemetery, close to a small Chapel (that is unfortunately not usually open). Here lie my great grandparents and many of my family members. You may also find a well known names, associated with Namibian history, around.
Please do not go during sunset or after dark. There is plenty of parking close to the nearest gate. Please do not leave valuables openly in your vehicle if parking outside. Sometimes the gate is open which enables visitors to drive and park near the chapel (Recommended if open). The roads in the cemetery are rather narrow, but if you park at the chapel, you can walk the last few meters.
Please always be safety conscious when caching in Windhoek and walking around. Stealth may be required.
