Le phare de Gatteville est le deuxième plus grand phare d’Europe, après celui de l’île Vierge en Bretagne. Il fut construit entre 1828 et 1835 d’après les plans de Charles-Félix Morice de la Rue, architecte et ingénieur des ponts et chaussées sous le règne de Charles X. Il est composé de 11 000 blocs de granit pesant 7 400 tonnes au total et mesure près de 75 mètres. Il comporte autant de marches que de jours dans l'année, autant de fenêtres que de semaines et autant de niveaux (représentés par le nombre de fenêtres en façade) que de mois.

Il est ouvert à la visite presque toute l'année, sauf par vent fort.

The lighthouse in Gatteville is the second tallest in Europe, only surpassed by the on Virgin Island in Brittany. It was built between 1828 and 1835 based on architectural plans devised by Engineer Charles-Félix Morice de la Rue during the reign of Charles X of France. It is made up of 11 000 blocks of granit weighing a total of 7,400 tonnes et stands 75 meters tall. It has a many steps as there are days in a year, as many Windows as there are weeks, and as many landings as there are months. The latter lign up with the windows to the front of the lighthouse.

It is open to visitors most of the year, except in windy conditions.
