Geocache Description:

New Salem Cemetery was establish in 1883.  It is located in Salem Township in Cowley County.  This cemetery has some interesting features and headstones to look at.

One is the pavilion. It has a date of 1924 on the south side and the name Coffey on the east side.  The Coffey family is buried under the structure.  The cemetery lay out is also under the structure but it is a little out dated.

Another thing I noticed was that there are a few headstones that are angled compared to the others.  You will noticed them I sure.

One of these is Pvt William Alonzo Mansfield. He was a Union soldier in the Civil War.  He was in Company H, 143rd Regiment, Illinois Infantry.  He died January 18, 1917 at the age of 71.  What I found interesting was his date of birth.  He was born July 17th, 1845.  We shared the same birthday not the year of course but the day. wink

Go to William,s headstone and head south to the nearest cedar.  Hey, what's that pipe doing there!!!   Happy Hunting.
