Di fonte alla chiesa dei Carmini nel sestiere di Dorsoduro a Venezia, vi è un bellissimo palazzo costruito nel corso del ‘500; oggi è in parte sede del consolato belga, ma un tempo era la dimora di una famosa e potente famiglia nobile veneziana, i Foscarini.
Gli interni del palazzo, disposti su sei piani, conservano al primo piano nobile pregevoli soffitti affrescati di epoca seicentesca e tracce di stucchi settecenteschi.
Nella seconda metà del XVIII secolo viveva qui Marco Foscarini, uomo di grande cultura e brillante oratore che, nel 1762, divenne doge; nel giardino del suo palazzo fece costruire un ‘casino delle delizie', un piccolo edificio neoclassico ricco di marmi e legni di gran pregio, decorato con i busti dei filosofi dell'antichità e dipinti di grandi personaggi storici. Qui, Marco aveva riunito una grande raccolta di libri e manoscritti ed aveva cominciato a scrivere una storia della letteratura veneziana.
Durante il suo operato, il doge contrasse molti debiti con il dogado… Le collezioni d'arte della famiglia furono vendute dai suoi discendenti e il palazzo cominciò un lungo declino culminato con i saccheggi durante la conquista francese del 1797.
Adesso il palazzo avrebbe un gran bisogno di restauri ed il giardino, un tempo famoso in tutta Venezia per la sua straordinaria armonia e per le statue che lo adornavano, è ora ridotto ad una semplice area verde; se andate nella vicina calle dei Ragusei al civico 3484 potrete vedere la facciata del Casino in marmo d'Istria, abbellito da statue e colonne. Opposite the Carmini Church in Dorsoduro in Venice, there is a beautiful building built during the 1500s. Today part of it is the headquarters of the Belgian consulate, but it was once the home of the famous and powerful noble Foscarini Venetian family.
The interior of the building has two floors, the first floor retains valuable frescoed ceilings of the 17th century and traces of 18th-century stuccos.
In the second half of the 18th century Marco Foscarini lived here, a man of great culture and a brilliant orator who, in 1762, became doge. In the garden of his palace he built a 'casino of delights', a small neoclassical building rich in marble and wood of great value, decorated with the busts of the ancient philosophers and paintings of great historical figures. Here, Marco assembled a large collection of books and manuscripts and began to write a history of Venetian literature.
During his work, the doge encountered many debts. The art collections of the family were thereby sold by his descendants and the palace began a long decline that culminated in its looting during the French conquest of 1797.
Now the building is in badly need of renovations and the garden, once famous throughout Venice for its extraordinary harmony and the statues that adorned it, is now reduced to a simple green area. If you go to the nearby Ragusei Street at number 3484 you will see the facade of the Casino in Istrian marble, adorned with statues and columns.
